Door Step Sellers

Postby ma-ogy » Sat Jan 30, 2010 3:48 pm

I have just received our monthly information from our local Home Watch scheme , in it there is a copy of an email from the co-ordinator regarding door step sellers , this goes on to say that there are youths in the Macclesfield area knocking on doors selling poor quality goods, perporting to be ex offenders on Government Schemes .
To quote our co-ordinator , there is no national scheme in place ,and also the local probation service has confirmed that they are not aware of any such schemes .

on several occasions the the caller has an identification badge which appears to be from the Probation service or the Prison ,
The Probation service does not run this service and does not issue badges and Prison identification is taken of them on release.

So if your not sure whos at the door dont open it especially at night.

Thank you for that information from all of us who don't have the benefit of a consciencious home watch scheme co-ordinator. Strangers at the door are a pest at the best of times, but I think these door step sellers are just casing the joint anyway. I wish reputable organisations wouldn't use these methods, the energy companies and some charities spring to mind. The Betterware catalogue is a nuisance too, its pushed through the door with an instruction to put it in a plastic bag and leave it outside if you're going to be out on such a day! Yeah, I'll just put a big sign in my window saying "House empty, break in round the back and help yourselves" too.

Why don't all these people just put a short note through the door giving a number to call if we're interested......I'll tell you why, because most of us aren't!!

You can get all of the police information by email if you register with poynton.community.contacts@cheshire.pnn.police.uk

The last but one had the November newsletter attached. I would have attached it, but it's too long.

We've had lads like that coming round selling here in Hazel Grove a couple of times over the past year too. Interesting to know that officialdom doesn't know of any such scheme. We also had a Polish lad flogging pencil drawings - or, rather, reproductions of them.

I have bought from them - the stuff's a bit over-priced, but the quality's been OK - in fact I got the best ovencloth I've had in years from one of them. No attempted break-ins to follow, either - at least, if anyone tried, they were so delicate that they left not a mark!

I suspect it's a minimum-wage, or commission-only, dead-end job for the unskilled.
